“Louis Pasteur’s Publication of the Germ Theory was the biggest turning point in medicine in the period c1700-c1900”
How far do you agree with this statement?
You may use the following in your answer:
•Edward Jenner
•Robert Koch
You must also use information of your own (20 marks)
Answer:
I agree with this statement to some extent.
In Pasteur's germ theory, he suggested that the spread of microorganisms in the body were what caused disease. This turned out to be true, and would lead to advancements in medicine - specifically in prevention of and treatment of diseases, as physicians and scientists would be able to treat the microorganisms causing the problem.
Not only that, but it also led to Robert Koch isolating the microorganisms that caused multiple diseases that were rampant at the time, including tuberculosis and cholera. Koch's research then led to the research of and creation of more vaccines that put a stop to the massive death rates of these diseases, especially in highly-populated areas which were incredibly vulnerable to these illnesses. ( E.g. London).
However, Pasteur's germ theory was not believed by many people, who still believed in other explanations for disease, such as spontaneous generation. One of these individuals was Henry Bastion, who was a prominent and well-trusted English physician at the time; he openly voiced his disagreement with Pasteur. Due to this, germ theory was not widely believed until later on in this period, which led to many physicians not adapting their diagnosis and treatment around germ theory for a long time until it was widely accepted in the 1890s.
Another reason I disagree is due to the discovery of the smallpox vaccine by Edward Jenner. Jenner's vaccine, which was an injection of cowpox (a safe variant of smallpox) was the world's first vaccine. His discovery helped to decrease the death rate of smallpox which, at that time, was a highly deadly and incurable disease. The smallpox vaccination led to the research of other vaccines and was arguably another big turning point in medicine in 1700 to 1900.
In conclusion, I somewhat agree with Pasteur's germ theory being the biggest point in medicine in the period given, due to it's impact on how we understood disease and it being the foundation of Koch's discoveries, however the opposition to germ theory and Jenner's smallpox vaccination lessen the impact that it had up until the late 1800s at least.
Note:
Hope this is okay, I last did a history question a year ago! :)
In his germ theory , Pasteur postulated that disease was brought on by the spread of germs within the body. It turned proved to be true, and this would result in improvements in medicine, particularly in the prevention and treatment of diseases.
What is germ theory? The generally accepted scientific theory for many diseases is the germ theory of disease. It claims that pathogens, also referred to as "germs," can cause disease. These microscopic organisms invade people, other animals, and other living hosts because they are too small to be seen without a magnifying glass.
Additionally, it helped Robert Koch isolate the bacteria responsible for a number of diseases that were common at the time, including cholera and tuberculosis. Following Koch's findings, new vaccinations were developed and researched, which significantly reduced the death rates from these diseases, particularly in densely populated areas that were particularly susceptible to them. (For instance, London)
Many people, however, continued to believe in other theories for disease, such as spontaneous genesis, and did not accept Pasteur's germ hypothesis. Henry Bastion, a well-known and respected English physician at the time who openly voiced his disagreement with Pasteur, was one of these people.
Due to Edward Jenner's development of the smallpox vaccine, I disagree for a second reason. The first vaccination ever created was Jenner's injection of cowpox, a safe form of smallpox.
His research contributed to a reduction in the mortality rate of smallpox, which at the time was an extremely lethal and fatal illness. In the period between 1700 and 1900, the smallpox vaccination stimulated research into other vaccines and was likely another significant turning point in medicine.

The 12th Amendment, which was enacted by Congress on December 9, 1803, and ratified by the state legislatures on June 15, 1804, fixed flaws in the previous electoral system that led to the contentious Presidential Election of 1800 by requiring separate Electoral College votes for the president and vice president.
What was the purpose of the amendment?Amendments allow for gradual law and policy improvement as opposed to complete replacement. The ratification of amendments allows for the modification of local, state, and federal laws. In the United States, legislative bodies work under the assumption that rules and regulations may be improved over time.
With the provisions of the Twelfth Amendment, it was made clear that if a new president was not chosen by that calendar day, the elected vice president would carry out those corresponding duties in the interim. In 1933, the Twentieth Amendment changed the inauguration date to January 20.
