Answer 1
1) Spartan political system was a combination of monarchy (kings), oligarchy (Gerousia) and democracy (ephoroi, ephors). Oligarchy– Sparta always had two kings, the state was ruled by two hereditary kings of the Agiad and Eurypontid families (probably the two gens had great merits in the conquest of Laconia)

2) In the ancient Greek world, religion was personal, direct, and present in all areas of life. With formal rituals which included animal sacrifices and libations, myths to explain the origins of mankind and give the gods a human face, temples which dominated the urban landscape, city festivals and national sporting and artistic competitions, religion was never far from the mind of an ancient Greek. Whilst the individual may have made up their own mind on the degree of their religious belief and some may have been completely sceptical, certain fundamentals must have been sufficiently widespread in order for Greek government and society to function: the gods existed, they could influence human affairs, and they welcomed and responded to acts of piety and worship.

Euclid: Euclid is a Greek mathematician, he lived during the Hellenistic Age. He wrote a book about geometry that many people still study today.

Ptolemy: Ptolemy blended the religions of Greece and Egypt into a form that appealed to many people. He ruled after Alexander’s death, and made a world famous library called the Library of Alexandria.

Socrates: Socrates was a philosopher, he taught by using questions. He was put on trial when he was seventy years old. He was accused of corrupting the city’s youth and disrespecting the gods.

Draco: Draco wrote the first clear set of laws in effort to stop the fighting between aristocratic families. He was an Athenian lawmaker who introduced the first written code of law in Ancient Greece.

Sparta won the Peloponnesian War because the Athenians were trapped inside their own walls and there was no cleanliness. A plague struck the city, and within two years one-third of the Athenian population had died.

5. Only Spartan men could become citizens. Women were allowed to own property, and could inherit land from their ancestors. Unhealthy children were killed at birth, boys who survived to the age of seven entered military training and lived in barracks.

6.

Athens had 30 years as the minimum age to be an Archon, while the United States has set the minimum age of 35 to be president.

The Council of 500 has the same number of representatives for each of the ten tribes, while the United States has two people to represent each state.

Athens and the United States use judges and juries. Athens had over 200 jurors per case, while the U.S. has 12.

"In 1085, William warranted an extensive survey to be carried out, similar to a census by a government of today. His royal officers held a public inquiry into the value of all homes and what they owned, and recorded all their data into what is known as the Domesday Book, which itself was divided into two parts - Little Domesday and Great Domesday. Surprisingly, it was prepared in the space of one year and was completed in 1086. The Domesday Book is a statistical document and was used as an administrative tool, a basis for more decisive taxation of William's new realm and to fund his warfare. It involved the first kingdom-wide poll taken in Europe since the Roman era."

How was Athens a civilized and advanced society?

Answers

Answer:

The citizens of Athens decided matters of state in the Assembly of the People, the principle organ of Athen’s democracy.  The Athenian democracy provided a number of governmental resources to its population in order to encourage participation in the democratic process.  Many governmental posts in classical Athens were chosen by lot, in an attempt to discourage corruption and patronage.  The Athenian elite lived relatively modestly, and wealth and land were not concentrated in the hands of the few, but rather distributed fairly evenly across the upper classes.  Thetes occupied the lowest rung of Athenian society, but were granted the right to hold public office during the reforms of Ephialtes and Pericles.

Can someone plz write a letter to a friend about the Siege of Tyre from the point of view of a citizen?

I'm giving 40 points, so please don't waste them! Need by Sunday, February 4th.

Answers

Answer:

Most of the material involved in constructing a massive earthen project like this involves a stone base with dirt and earth more or less used as filler. Massive wooden stakes are also used to support the structure. If a structure was made totally of dirt in the water, it would collapse upon the weight of men and siege towers. Waves would also easily erode it.

To accomplish the construction of this project, Alexander sent his soldiers into the woods of Lebanon to cut down trees to get the necessary supplies. The cedars in Phoenicia were very famous in ancient times so Alexander's men chopped down the trees and hauled them back to their camp. They sharpened one end of the tree and pounded it into the sand like a giant tent spike. This would protect the sides of their dam. While some soldiers pounded the giant trees into the ground, others were demolishing the ruins of the land based city of Tyre and bringing them to the shore to be dumped into the sea.

The people of Tyre did not really notice what was going on at first, as they may have simply thought Alexander was building beach fortifications. They never thought he would build an earthen bridge to them. However, soon it became apparent as to what Alexander and his army were doing and the people of Tyre became rightly alarmed. As the earthen structure began to grow in size day after day after day the people of Tyre began really mounting their defense. The people of Tyre began building anti-siege weaponry on their massive 150 foot walls that would fling massive stones and darts at the incoming Greeks. They also sent some of their agents ashore to make diplomatic alliances with several neighboring tribes. The people of Tyre had great wealth and if they survived, these tribes would be greatly rewarded.

So Tyre tasked these tribes with disrupting the gathering of resource efforts by Alexander's army. Tyre also landed a small contingent of its own men on the shore and tried to repel the stone gathering operation at the ancient ruins of Tyre. Having a considerable navy with their manned war galleys that protected their merchants from pirates, Tyre decided to respond even further. The war galleys rode right up to the construction side of the earthen dam walkway and bombarded the crew with all sorts of arrows and projectiles. While the first offense of Tyre slowly impeded Alexander's efforts, ultimately what they did was in vain. Alexander resumed his construction efforts right away and began building defensive structures around the camps. Alexander and his army built huge screens of wood and covered them with animal hides to protect them from any projectiles launched while they were working.

As the work advanced more defensive structures were built, especially at the sides and the front facing the city. These structures consisted partially of the great siege engines required for driving the massive wooden piles into the sea, along with catapults for throwing massive stones. Soldiers would also be able to throw stones, darts and shoot the galleys with bows and arrows from these siege towers which prevented them from getting too close to the workers.

Hey guys hope you all are having a great day !!!

1. How can differences of political opinion turn friends into enemies?
2. Why is it important to understand people who think differently from you? In other words, why is it important to be "tolerant" of other people's political opinions?

Answers

Answer:

1. How can differences of political opinion turn friends into enemies?

It'll happen quite easily actually. If two people (who happen to be friends) got into an argument on their opinions the fight can lead to them not being friends anymore. They might of respected their opinions more than each other which would eventually end in fight. (In my experience.)

2. Why is it important to understand people who think differently from you? In other words, why is it important to be "tolerant" of other people's political opinions?

Although it is hard to respect others political choices, you'll have to consider that they can trust what or who they want to. They also have their own rights.

Explanation:

Hope it helps.

Answers:

1. Through Biology and certain instincts we have built into us

2. Tolerance is important because, without it, we would be crumbling into chaos (as we already are, because people seem to not be tolerant)

Explanations:

1. We, as humans, think of ourselves as higher than others. We get fixated on our views and it gets harder to accept other ideas and views others have. Humans have a tendency to argue their point, even when they subconsciously know that they will get nowhere. I have, and I am sure you as well, have seen this happen many times and are kind of sick of it. I have, and so have many others, participated in these arguments of futility, and have probably at some point noticed (and accepted) that they couldn't convince the other.

For instance, if I support President John Doe, because of reason 1, I can tell my friend. However, If my friend supports President Jane Doe, because of reason 2, and reason 1 is invalid because of reason 3, then I have a problem on my hands. As I said before, we think of ourselves higher; According to experience, (and the human brain and studies), this will incite an argument, each person arguing their point in futility. Sometimes an argument is too big to get over, and people split.

2. Abraham Lincon said, "A house divided against itself cannot stand".

These immortal words have been proven not so immortal. As stated in explanation 1, people get into futile arguments quite often. Notice how I said futile. Note that.

Looking at the example in "1", we see that friends get torn apart and people get rifts shoved between them because of these arguments. That is the stick. Getting fixated on your views is so dangerous because you close your mind and become unlikable, which is one of the most underrated things by far.

By opening your mind to other people's points, you see that there is a whole mountain of points against and for everything. This is the Carrot. I too was once a close-minded person. I disregarded everything everyone said and replaced it with my own, if I may, President John Doe. Now that I opened my eyes, I can "see clearly now, the rain has gone" and I know that there is a whole world we never see because of our own prison of futility and lies.

Conclusion: Reading this, hopefully, you will see that it is much better to accept anothers' point and understand it than to ignore it.

That is the carrot, that is the stick, and we are the donkey.
