How can the Salem witch trials "continue to serve as a warning for how suspicion and fear
can overtake a community"?

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

The Salem Witch trials cam still be seen as a warning of suspicion and fear because people were burnt at the stake over suspicious and fear.

Answer 2
The Salem witch trials of 1692 were a dark period in American history in which dozens of people were falsely accused of witchcraft and many were convicted and executed. The trials were a result of a combination of factors, including religious fervor, political conflicts, and personal grudges. But one of the main reasons for the trials was the fear and suspicion that gripped the community of Salem Village, Massachusetts.

The trials continue to serve as a warning for how suspicion and fear can overtake a community in several ways. One of the most obvious ways is by demonstrating the dangers of mass hysteria and the ease with which it can be sparked and spread among a group of people.

The trials also highlight the power of manipulation and the willingness of individuals to exploit others for their own gain. Individuals such as the young accusers and the "witch hunters" who were behind the prosecution of so many people were motivated by personal gain, ambition and power.

Additionally, the trials also serve as a reminder of how the justice system can fail when it is driven by emotion and popular opinion, rather than evidence and reason. The false accusations and the subsequent trials were based on spectral evidence and "confessions" obtained under duress and torture, which should not be used as evidence of any crime.

Overall, the Salem witch trials are a cautionary tale about how fear and suspicion can lead to a loss of reason and justice, and how important it is to be vigilant against these forces in any community.

Voluntourism: An Opportunity Too Good to be True

A Speech to the Student Body of Evergreen High

[1] Picture this: It's Spring Break, and you fly off to some country where there's lush rainforests and beautiful, blue coastlines to explore. There's also people in need, so you decide to blend your vacation with volunteering. Volunteering as a tourist, or voluntourism, seems like a great way to explore new regions and help people at the same time. However, this "volunteer plus travel" experience can actually harm local communities. While many teens might view traveling and volunteering abroad as a worthwhile adventure, there are more genuine and effective ways to make a difference.

[2] Most would agree that volunteering in general is a worthy use of time. However, what if you found out the children you are "helping" are actually being kept in poor conditions so voluntourists will spend money to come to the local area? Dale Rolfe, a supporter of ethical voluntourism, explains the shocking reality that "Animal sanctuaries and orphanages are often manufactured for the voluntourist...encouraging a cycle of exploiting the very animals and children the volunteers are trying to help."

[3] Proponents of the "volunteer plus travel" experience also argue that traveling to new places builds character and is a valuable way to learn about different cultures. With voluntourism, however, participants often pursue experiences that are all about them. For example, they sign up to build a school for a gold star on their resume, but they have no real building skills and take jobs away from local construction workers (Schulten). Or, they arrive to teach English but instead take selfies with the locals. One world traveler and ethical voluntourist believes voluntourism "can perpetuate small minded views of the world by taking insulated, fake, and structured experiences and selling them as unabridged and eye opening" (Carlos). The voluntour experience is a mirage. The voluntourist's eyes are not opened to real life at the destination, and lasting change is not achieved.

[4] If you want a genuine experience where you can see a lasting impact, there are better options than voluntourism. You can volunteer in your local community. Give an hour every week to your town's animal rescue. Serve monthly dinners to the homeless. Be a reliable, positive influence on a child who needs a mentor. Studies show that volunteering and forming lasting relationships with those you help has a positive impact on your physical and emotional health. In fact, blood pressure is reduced, memory is improved, and rates of depression are reduced (Michaels).

[5] There is another reason to look into alternatives to voluntourism. Did you know the average "voluntour" travel package costs $3,400 (Rolfe)? Could that travel money be better spent? If the world's citizens are your passion, it could go to an international organization. If you care about education, your funds can be used to buy books for students in faraway lands. If you want villagers to have clean water, contribute funds to local efforts to dig wells. If you want to experience a different culture, travel to the country as a guest, and learn from the locals how you can best help them after you've returned home. But do not voluntour.

[6] In reality, there are better ways to make a difference. Voluntourism might appear to be an adventure that blends travel and helping others, but it does little except provide a costly, superficial experience that might actually do more harm than good. So, volunteer where you are most needed-at home, where you can stay to see the job through and form genuine, lasting relationships. Choose a beautiful coastline closer to home and send the travel money you saved to an international organization that will put it to good use. Whatever you do, don't turn someone else's hardship into your vacation.

How does the speaker's rhetorical question in paragraph 2 support the purpose of the speech?

It emphasizes the need for willing and wealthy volunteers to bring help to those less fortunate.
It highlights how unfair life can be for certain groups of people throughout the world.
It reinforces the idea that voluntourism can harm the people and communities it is meant to help.
It reminds the audience that there are some who fight the injustice associated with voluntourism.

Answers

The speaker's rhetorical question in paragraph 2 supports the purpose of the speech in that:

It reinforces the idea that voluntourism can harm the people and communities it is meant to help.

How did the speaker's use of rhetorics support the speech?

In the text above, the speaker's use of rhetorics supports the speech because it shows that voluntourism can have the opposite effect instead of what it was initially designed for.

It asks a question that shows that some people were doing things to exploit the good effort of genuine voluntourists.

This is why some recommendations were made such as the voluntourists offering their services in nearby facilities When they are close to such places where they offer their help, they may thus be able to see that people are taking advantage of their kindness.

So, the author recommended that they volunteer within their communities and offer monetary contributions to credible organizations. Therefore, option D is right.

Select the correct text in the passage. Which detail best develops the central idea that James Watt and Matthew Boulton worked together to develop steam engine?

The Steam Engine

The idea of using steam for driving stationary machinery originated in the early centuries. For a long time, no one seemed to have thought of using steam for transportation purposes. In the earlier historical records, there is mention of "heat engines," which were used for organ blowing, the turning of spits, and like purposes. But from this early date until the 17th century, practically no progress was made in the use of steam. Though men had experimented with steam up to this time with more or less success, the world is chiefly indebted for the developed type of the steam engine to James Watt and George Stephenson.
James Watt, who secured the position as a maker of scientific instruments at the University of Glasgow, proposed an idea for improving the existing steam engine, which was used for pumping mines. For a long time, owing to a lack of money, he had difficulty in establishing the merits of his improvements. Finally, he formed a partnership with Matthew Boulton, a wealthy and energetic man who lived at Birmingham, England. They began the manufacture of steam engines at Birmingham, under the firm name of Boulton and Watt. This partnership was very successful. Watt supplied the inventions; Boulton furnished the money and attended to the business.
BeforeBefore the time of Watt, the steam engine was exclusively a steam pump—slow and wasteful of fuel. Watt made it a quick, powerful, and efficient engine, requiring only a fourth as much fuel as before. Under his first patent, the engine was still used only as a steam pump, but his later improvements adapted it for driving stationary machinery of all kinds. The commercial success of his engine was soon fully established.
George Stephenson further modified Boulton and Watt Company's creation. Stephenson initiated the use of steam for carrying passengers and goods. In September 1825, the first train passed over the road. It consisted of 34 cars weighing, all told, 90 tons. The train was pulled by Stephenson's engine, operated by Stephenson himself, with a signalman riding on horseback in advance. The train moved off at the rate of 10 or 12 miles an hour, and on certain parts of the road it reached a speed of 15 miles per hour. The trial was a complete success.

I have beheld the impressive outlay of her massive religious education buildings. Over and over again I have found myself asking: "Who worships here? Who is their God? Where were their voices when the lips of Governor Barnett dripped with words of interposition and nullification? Where were their voices of support when tired, bruised, and weary Negro men and women decided to rise from the dark dungeons of complacency to the bright hills of creative protest?"

[10] There was a time when the Church was very powerful … In those days the Church was not merely a thermometer that recorded the ideas and principles of popular opinion; it was a thermostat that transformed the mores of society. Wherever the early Christians entered a town the power structure got disturbed and immediately sought to convict them for being "disturbers of the peace" and "outside agitators." Things are different now. The contemporary Church is so often a weak, ineffectual voice with an uncertain sound. It is so often the arch-supporter of the status quo. Far from being disturbed by the presence of the Church, the power structure of the average community is consoled by the Church's silent and often vocal sanction of things as they are.
