They slept in narrow punks stacked three high. They had no showers, no lounges, and no dining rooms. Food served from huge kettles were dished into dinner pails provided by the steamship company . . . The voyage was an ordeal, but it was worth it. . . . Edward Corsi, who later became United States Commissioner of Immigration, was a ten-year-old Italian immigrant when he sailed into New York harbor in 1907: My first impressions of the New World will always remain etched in my memory, particularly that hazy October morning when I first saw Ellis Island. The steamer Florida, fourteen days out of Naples, filled to capacity with 1600 natives of Italy, had weathered one of the worst storms in our captain’s memory.

Racing to Race
Carlo stopped to rest for a minute and tried to catch his breath. He’d been running for so long that he had pains in his side and his legs were beginning to hurt. He hunched over and tried to expand his lungs, but it was like trying to suck air out of a bicycle tire. His body was too exhausted to even allow him to take a deep breath, and he started to wheeze again.
“Great,” he thought, “let me just add asthma to my expanding list of ailments. I can’t believe that I can’t even jog two miles without completely collapsing!” He finally gave in to his aching body and laid down on the grass to recuperate. He closed his eyes and tried to imagine himself running on the school track in the 1,600-meter race. He pictured himself running steadily toward the finish line, running effortlessly like a cheetah in the jungle. He was so lost in thought that he didn’t even hear Meiya approach.
“Hey sleepyhead, what are you doing napping on Sean’s lawn in the middle of the day?” Meiya asked playfully.
Carlo quickly sat up, breathing normally now and feeling a little embarrassed. “I am trying to get in shape to try out for track, but I can’t even run two miles,” he said dejectedly.
“Wait, how many months are you out of surgery? Didn’t you just finish rehab last week?” Meiya asked. “You can’t expect to run two miles the first day.”
It had been six months since Carlo’s surgery and he specifically remembered the doctor telling him he could start running after six months. But he thought about what Meiya had said and realized she had a good point. After his surgery, the doctor did say rehab would be crucial to his recovery but that it would take time for him to gain back full use of his leg. He thought about how a baby had to learn to walk before it could run. He remembered when his nephew was learning to crawl; within days it seemed like he was walking. Running didn’t come right away, Carlo remembered. He realized it was the same with his therapy. The maximum he had run in the past month was one mile on the treadmill, so he realized that Meiya was probably right. He would have to work at building up his endurance and set more realistic goals for himself. As he thought about what he had already accomplished, he started to smile and felt like a weight was being lifted off his shoulders. He realized that he had run almost a mile and a half before his body started to protest and if he kept working hard, he could get back to where he was before his accident.
“Since when did you get so smart, Dr. Meiya?” he teased. “Do you want to race to the next mailbox?”
“You’re on!” she challenged and took off running at full speed.

Wild animals as viewed from a mountain camp—Camille Grant, October 2011
Through my binoculars, I viewed a group of wild animals in action. A pride of lions was sleeping when a small, yellow bus pulled up beside them. Tourists on a safari were packed into the bus like sardines in a can. Armed with cameras, they invaded the lions' territory, hoping to capture the perfect photograph. The crowd leaned out the windows, hooting and hollering, until the lions awoke. When the lions moved away, the bus rolled after them, relentlessly stalking the pride. One of the lions turned and roared to protect the young. This was greeted with cheers and a celebratory honk of the bus horn. The curious visitors observed the lions' routine for an hour before moving on. Leaving a cloud of dust, the bus headed away, taking the wild animals off to disturb someone else's home.

Read the following paragraphs carefully to see if they create a mood.
My name is Cory. I don't really know why I watched hidden under the table. I heard the hushed tones at the door as they asked for my mother. I couldn't choke back the tears as I caught the words "missing in action." No, I thought, not Dad. Missing in action is just a nice way of saying he's dead. He'll never come back, I thought. I wept openly. And yet, no one seemed to notice me. Hugging myself tightly, my heart was heavy as I listened to the men leave and my mother sob.

Christopher Reeve was born on September 25, 1952, in New York City. His mother was a journalist, and his father was a professor. As a kid he played sports, did well in school, and liked acting. His passion for acting goes back to playing with his brother when they were little. Reeve acted in his first play at the age of nine. After attending college, taking acting classes, and acting in many plays and movies, Reeve landed his biggest role. In 1978, he played the title role in Superman. Once well-known, Reeve used his celebrity status for good causes, such as visiting very sick children through the Make-A-Wish foundation. He was also a track and field coach at the Special Olympics.
Besides acting, Reeve was also a licensed pilot and liked horseback riding. He learned to ride horses for a movie role, and he continued riding in his free time. Unfortunately, while riding one day in 1995, Reeve fell from his horse and became paralyzed from the neck down. Being confined to a wheelchair did not hold back Reeve from being socially active, and after many surgeries and rehabilitation, he decided to dedicate his life to helping people with spinal-cord injuries. He created the Christopher Reeve Foundation, which supports the improvement of the lives of people with disabilities and helps fund research to find a cure for paralysis. He was also politically active, working with senators to make sure that people with disabilities were treated fairly in the workplace. Reeve received many awards for his dedication to public service.
