By comparing the narrator's sentiments with "a little seesaw of the right throbs and the wrong," the writer creates a mood of uncertainty.
Why is this mood created?Because seesaws are objects without stability.Because the seesaw keeps their extremities in contradictory positions. The positioning and movement that the seesaw assume are what reinforce the narrator's uncertainty. This uncertainty is even more highlighted when the narrator shows that the seesaw is composed of concepts of right and wrong.
This highlights how the narrator's feelings are contradictory, disharmonious, and inconclusive, which prevents him from thinking clearly and having an accurate view of the situation in which he is inserted.
The result of this is that the narrator finds it difficult to be sure, and uncertainty drives his thoughts and decisions. This uncertainty is so strong that it is transmitted to the reader, thus creating the mood of the text.

While Sierra and her friends are
joking about the hipster coffee shop,
they are also critiquing how and why
their neighborhoods are changing.
What is the significance behind this
conversation and what are Sierra
and her friends seeing?
The significance behind Sierra and her friends' conversation about the hipster coffee shop and their changing neighborhoods lies in their awareness and critique of gentrification.
Gentrification is a process in which urban neighborhoods, often in lower-income or historically marginalized areas, undergo significant changes due to an influx of wealthier residents and businesses. As a result of gentrification, the neighborhood's character, culture, and socioeconomic dynamics can transform.
In the context of the conversation, Sierra and her friends are joking about the hipster coffee shop, which is a typical symbol of gentrification. Hipster coffee shops are often associated with a particular style, catering to a more affluent and trendy clientele, and they can be seen as indicators of the changing demographic and commercial landscape in a neighborhood.
While joking about the coffee shop, Sierra and her friends are also engaging in a deeper critique of how and why their neighborhoods are changing. They are likely observing the emergence of new businesses, upscale developments, and higher-priced housing, which can displace longtime residents and alter the neighborhood's cultural fabric. This awareness might stem from experiencing firsthand or witnessing the effects of gentrification, such as rising rents, loss of local businesses, and shifts in the neighborhood's identity.
Sierra and her friends' conversation highlights their concern about the impact of gentrification on the social and economic well-being of their communities. They are witnessing the transformation of their neighborhoods and grappling with the complexities of these changes. Their critique of the hipster coffee shop becomes a metaphor for the larger process of gentrification and its implications on the lives of those who have been living in the neighborhood for generations.
Overall, the significance of this conversation lies in the reflection of broader social issues related to urban development, socioeconomic inequality, and the preservation of community identity amidst urban change. Sierra and her friends are raising important questions about the dynamics of their neighborhoods and expressing their understanding of the multifaceted effects of gentrification on the lives of residents.

Voluntourism: An Opportunity Too Good to be True
A Speech to the Student Body of Evergreen High
[1] Picture this: It's Spring Break, and you fly off to some country where there's lush rainforests and beautiful, blue coastlines to explore. There's also people in need, so you decide to blend your vacation with volunteering. Volunteering as a tourist, or voluntourism, seems like a great way to explore new regions and help people at the same time. However, this "volunteer plus travel" experience can actually harm local communities. While many teens might view traveling and volunteering abroad as a worthwhile adventure, there are more genuine and effective ways to make a difference.
[2] Most would agree that volunteering in general is a worthy use of time. However, what if you found out the children you are "helping" are actually being kept in poor conditions so voluntourists will spend money to come to the local area? Dale Rolfe, a supporter of ethical voluntourism, explains the shocking reality that "Animal sanctuaries and orphanages are often manufactured for the voluntourist…encouraging a cycle of exploiting the very animals and children the volunteers are trying to help."
[3] Proponents of the "volunteer plus travel" experience also argue that traveling to new places builds character and is a valuable way to learn about different cultures. With voluntourism, however, participants often pursue experiences that are all about them. For example, they sign up to build a school for a gold star on their resume, but they have no real building skills and take jobs away from local construction workers (Schulten). Or, they arrive to teach English but instead take selfies with the locals. One world traveler and ethical voluntourist believes voluntourism "can perpetuate small minded views of the world by taking insulated, fake, and structured experiences and selling them as unabridged and eye opening" (Carlos). The voluntour experience is a mirage. The voluntourist's eyes are not opened to real life at the destination, and lasting change is not achieved.
[4] If you want a genuine experience where you can see a lasting impact, there are better options than voluntourism. You can volunteer in your local community. Give an hour every week to your town's animal rescue. Serve monthly dinners to the homeless. Be a reliable, positive influence on a child who needs a mentor. Studies show that volunteering and forming lasting relationships with those you help has a positive impact on your physical and emotional health. In fact, blood pressure is reduced, memory is improved, and rates of depression are reduced (Michaels).
[5] There is another reason to look into alternatives to voluntourism. Did you know the average "voluntour" travel package costs $3,400 (Rolfe)? Could that travel money be better spent? If the world's citizens are your passion, it could go to an international organization. If you care about education, your funds can be used to buy books for students in faraway lands. If you want villagers to have clean water, contribute funds to local efforts to dig wells. If you want to experience a different culture, travel to the country as a guest, and learn from the locals how you can best help them after you've returned home. But do not voluntour.
[6] In reality, there are better ways to make a difference. Voluntourism might appear to be an adventure that blends travel and helping others, but it does little except provide a costly, superficial experience that might actually do more harm than good. So, volunteer where you are most needed-at home, where you can stay to see the job through and form genuine, lasting relationships. Choose a beautiful coastline closer to home and send the travel money you saved to an international organization that will put it to good use. Whatever you do, don't turn someone else's hardship into your vacation.
Which paragraphs address the counterclaim of the argument?
Paragraphs 1 and 6
Paragraphs 2 and 3
Paragraphs 3 and 4
Paragraphs 4 and 5
Answer:
B) Paragraphs 2 and 3
Explanation:
Because this speech focuses on the negative impacts of volunteering and traveling at the same time, these paragraphs are considered COUNTERCLAIMS. The first phrase of paragraph number 2 is already a claim since it indicates the general belief of people that doing so might provide a person with some exceptional and memorable experiences. Also, in Paragraph 3, those who support this theory were given the chance to explain why they think the way they do and to point out any flaws or consequences of doing so.
