L14: Analyzing Word Choice 137
Part 1: Introduction
Have you ever heard someone say “It’s the little things that matter”? In everyday life, little
things can make you happy, sad, annoyed, or excited. In literature and poetry, the little
things that matter are words, chosen carefully by the author. Words affect meaning and
establish the tone, or the attitude of the narrator or speaker. Word choice also is
important because it can create the mood, or atmosphere, in a story or poem.
Read the poem below, paying close attention to poet’s choice of action verbs and
descriptive words.
Murky Monday. Lockers slam,
Doorways clog and hallways jam.
Sweetest Ruby smiles so wide—
She can’t see me shyly hide . . .
Wondrous Monday. Lockers shine.
Ruby smiled at me in line.
Circle words in each line that help you understand the speaker’s feelings.
Read the chart below to help you analyze the poet’s word choices in each line.
Lines Words with Positive Meaning Words with Negative Meaning
1–2 murky, slam, clog, jam
3–4 sweetest, smiles shyly, hide
5–6 wondrous, shine, smiled
Just as movie directors pay attention to the smallest details when setting up each scene,
authors pay attention to each word when they create poems and stories. In this poem, the
poet uses words to show how the speaker’s whole attitude changes after Ruby smiles at
him. Analyzing an author’s choice of words will help you understand a text’s meaning,
mood, and tone.

summary of the childrens return by tagore
Answer:
The Child’s Return as a story seems too fantastic for a modern reader. Largely due to Raicharan. Are there fathers in this world who give their child willingly to others? What made Raicharan took the central step in the story?
Anukul’s son died in care of Raicharan. Raicharan was around in his late thirties by this time. He spent his entire youth — starting from the age of twelve — in caring for Anukul(who went from boyhood to lawyer) and his son, who followed. Naturally, he was emotionally bonded to both father and the son. Further as a caretaker of the child, Raicharan internalized all the blame of the child’s death. Death of a child is the toughest loss to bear. If Raicharan hadn’t gone to the Kadamba tree, maybe the child would have been still in the mortal world.
Guilt works mysteriously in hearts of noble people. As a Hebrew proverb says,
Guilt is a gift that keeps on giving.
As fate made the child fall into the flooding river, it made Raicharan’s wife deliver a boy in middle age. Raicharan being a simple person, took it as a sign of divine rebirth of the dead child. He began raising this child as if he belonged to a magistrate’s(Anukul’s) house. By sacrificing his own means, he began gifting the child with great clothes, great food and great education. When in his early fifties, he became too ill to work due to self-neglect - he finally gave his son back to Anukul. To finalize the punishment, he takes the blame of stealing Anukul’s son. Anukul’s new son gifts Raicharan back with a pension.
Therefore apart from loss of Anukul’s son, Raicharan lost his own son as well. In his gift to Anukul, he canceled the couple’s pain. As another punishment on top of his guilt, he left his own son.
On a side note, it is beneficial to see why Tagore used death of children in his stories. Are they somehow connected to death of his own children? Maybe Tagore wanted to clarify something in his own heart by writing these stories.
I hope it's helpful!
The Summary of the Children's Return for a reader in the present day, the narrative of The Child's Return appears too fantastical. mostly because of Raicharan.
In Raicharan's care, Anukul's son passed away. By this time, Raicharan was in his late forties. Beginning at the age of twelve, he dedicated his whole youth to providing for Anukul, who grew from a youngster to become a lawyer, and his son, who followed.
He was, of course, emotionally attached to both the father and the boy. Raicharan further absorbed full responsibility for the child's passing as the caregiver. The worst loss to endure is the death of a child.

what does macbeth decide to do about macduff at the end of the scence
Answer:
Macbeth sends murderers to take Macduff's castle and kill Macduff's wife and children.
Read these paragraphs and answer the question that follows:
In 2008, more than one million American students gave nearly 20 million service hours to their communities. They made a difference in people's lives and learned some important life lessons in the process. Organizations, including schools, are actively promoting service for all citizens as a way to be involved, help others, and improve themselves.
Service is helping other people and being active in your community. For example, one group of teens planted a community garden with their friends. They grow a variety of vegetables. The garden requires regular care. The teens donate the produce to a local soup kitchen. Workers there use the produce to help feed people in the community. By tending the garden and donating their produce, the teens are actively helping make life a bit better for others in their community.
Service is valuable in ways that cannot be measured in dollars. People volunteer or serve others without expecting money or gifts in return. Service is not about earning money. It is not just collecting money to give to a group. It is about action and contributing to the common good. The people who serve as well as those who receive help benefit in many ways that are more important than money or gifts. For example, a soup kitchen provides essential food to people who may otherwise go hungry. The soup kitchen is extremely valuable for those struggling to get enough to eat. Those serving learn about compassion and how helping others can improve life for all.
Millions of Americans are making society better for themselves and for others. They are participating citizens in their community, raising up those who are less fortunate. In return, they become better people who can understand the perspectives and needs of others, which are invaluable and important qualities of good citizens.
Which sentence best represents the main idea of paragraph three, the second body paragraph?
a.) Service is valuable in ways that cannot be measured in dollars.
b.)It is about action and contributing to the common good.
c.)Workers there use the produce to help feed people in the community.
d.) The soup kitchen is extremely valuable for those struggling to get enough to eat.
Answer:
It is about action and contributing to the common good.

D.
Criterion is the singular version, and it is irregular because it is a Latin word in which the –on is changed to –a in its plural form.
Answer:
A. Criterion is the singular version, and it is irregular because it is a Greek word in which the –on is changed to –a in its plural form.
Explanation:
"Criteria" is the irregular plural form for the word "criterion", which means a principle, benchmark or standard by which something is judged. "Criterion" is a Greek word, which is why it has this irregular plural. Another Greek word that has the same -on ending and uses the same -a plural is "phenomenon"/"phenomena". With that in mind, we can safely choose letter A as the correct option.

Why can’t Siddhartha learn to love another?
What prevents him from embracing that feeling throughout the rest of his journey?
Answer:
He just can't yet
Explanation:
Young Siddhartha, full of grief, attends his mother’s funeral. He lives in the ferryman’s hut but will not eat. Siddhartha respects his grieving. He finds that the boy is spoiled, and used to rich things and the attention of his mother. The boy does not know Siddhartha and will find it hard to cope with such minimal conditions, so Siddhartha is patient and cares for him. But though at first, Siddhartha felt so enriched by the thought of knowing his son, as time goes on, the boy’s mischievous ways and surly attitude toward Siddhartha drains him of that initial joy. But still Siddhartha loves him and suffers through it. He and Vasudeva divide the work between the river and the hut so that Siddhartha can stay with his son.
Siddhartha has faced challenges throughout his life, but the arrival of his son and his son’s grief overtakes his mind and heart like nothing else so far. The familial bond seems to have an effect that no other bond has, not even the bond he had with Govinda or with his revered elders like Vasudeva and Gautama. It is the paternal bond that makes Siddhartha excuse the boy’s worldly sullen attitude that, in contrast, Siddhartha had greeted with such scorn when he first encountered it in the town.
Read the passage.
The thought of Plato, of Aristotle, and of the heroes of modern philosophy is ever proving anew its fructifying power. Nowhere do we find
such instructive errors as in the sphere of philosophy; nowhere is the new so essentially a completion and development of the old, even though it
deem itself the whole and assume a hostile attitude toward its predecessors; nowhere is the inquiry so much more important than the final result;
nowhere the categories "true and false" so inadequate. The spirit of the time and the spirit of the people, the individuality of the thinker,
disposition, will, fancy - all these exert a far stronger influence on the development of philosophy, both by way of promotion and by way of
hindrance, than in any other department of thought. If a system gives classical expression to the thought of an epoch, a nation, or a great
personality, if it seeks to attack the world-riddle from a new direction, or brings us nearer its solution by important original conceptions, by a subtler
or a simpler comprehension of the problem, by a wider outlook or a deeper insight; it has accomplished more than it could have done by bringing
forward a number of indisputably correct principles.
(from History of Modern Philosophy by Richard Falckenberg)
Which device does the author use throughout the passage?
O 1. parallelism
2. rhetorical question
O 3. paradox
4. simile
Answer:
1. parallelism
Explanation:
The device the author uses throughout the passage is parallelism.
Parallelism is known to be the positioning of two or more phrases or clauses in such a way that they have the same grammatical function in a sentence. This device helps to make writing effective and enjoyable when reading.
From the given passage, we will see that the author employed parallelism. We see parallelism in the following lines of the passage:
Nowhere do we find such instructive errors as in the sphere of philosophy; nowhere is the new so essentially a completion and development of the old, even though it deem itself the whole and assume a hostile attitude toward its predecessors; nowhere is the inquiry so much more important than the final result; nowhere the categories "true and false" so inadequate.
From the above, we see that after a semicolon, the author maintains a structure using nowhere.
Also, we see parallelism in the following as well:
The spirit of the time and the spirit of the people, the individuality of the thinker, disposition, will, fancy - all these exert a far stronger influence on the development of philosophy, both by way of promotion and by way of hindrance, than in any other department of thought.

Hence, we see that parallelism is used throughout the passage.
The device that the author uses throughout the passage is: 1. Parallelism.
What is parallelism?Parallelism is the use of the same grammatical form in a series of sentences.
